About SafesPick and how the file is built

What we are, and what we are not

We are a small editorial desk that reads spec sheets, manuals, warranty terms and Amazon listings. We are not a testing lab. We have not burned, drowned, drilled or pried any product on this site, and no page says otherwise.

Pages are signed Walt Pryor. That is a pen name for the SafesPick editorial desk, not a person with credentials. Walt does one thing: read the fine print carefully and report what it says.

Where the specs come from

1. The manufacturer first. Spec sheets, manuals, product pages and warranty documents.
2. The Amazon listing second. Bullet points first, the listing's spec table last — those tables often contain errors, such as weights in grams or interior sizes larger than the exterior.
3. Every value keeps its source. In our data each number is stored with the page it came from and how confident we are in it.
4. Unknown stays unknown. If we could not confirm a value, the table shows "—" and the value is marked not confirmed. We never estimate a missing number.

Rated vs. claimed

Fire and water ratings are shown with three parts: how long, how hot (or how deep), and who tested it.

• Rated — an independent lab is named (for example UL, ETL or Intertek).
• Claimed — the manufacturer states the rating and does not name an independent lab.
• Not confirmed — nobody we could find puts it in writing.

A word like "fireproof" on a listing, with no minutes or temperature, is recorded as no rating.

How products get into tables and lists

• Type pages (for example gun safes or wall safes) list every live product of that type that we track. A product is left out only when a confirmed spec rules it out.
• Best-of lists use a written rule, shown at the top of each list — for example "fire rating of 45 minutes or more, sorted by fire rating". Only confirmed values count. If a rule leaves fewer than three products, the list is not published.
• Brand pages show that brand's live products first. When a brand has few live products, we add alternatives from other brands, picked by product type and specs, and label them as alternatives.
• We do not use popularity scores, editor ratings or star ratings to rank anything.
• Amazon's own brands are not included.

Availability and prices

We check every product's availability on Amazon US regularly, using a New York delivery address (ZIP 10001). Products that are no longer available disappear from the tables.

We do not show prices. Prices change often, and the Check price button opens the current listing on Amazon.

Details are on our disclosure page. Commissions do not change which products appear in a table or the order they appear in: that comes from the written rules above.

Corrections

Specs change, manufacturers update manuals, and we make mistakes. If a value on this site does not match the manufacturer's documentation, tell us through the contact page and include a link to the source. We check it and correct the data.
