How to Open a Sentry Combination Safe: Right, Left, Right

A combination dial has no batteries, no app and no firmware. It has a number on a page and a sequence your hand has to remember. SentrySafe's manual covers the whole procedure in four steps. Most failed openings happen in step two, where "past it once" quietly means something more specific than it sounds.

Short answer: How to open a Sentry combination safe, per SentrySafe's Fire-Safe manual: turn the dial to 0, then turn right (clockwise) past 0 three times and keep going to the first number. Turn left (counterclockwise), go past the second number once and stop on it the second time. Turn right and stop at the third number. Then turn the handle down — or pull it outward on FP/FPW models. On dual key models, turn the key to "unlocked" first.

How to open a Sentry combination safe is a short procedure with a few traps, and SentrySafe's manuals list most of them in a troubleshooting table people skip. This page follows those manuals step by step. For the brand overview, see our SentrySafe brand page; for dial safes across brands, see combination safes.

Before you dial: the combination for Sentry safe models is on the manual

Both SentrySafe Fire-Safe manuals we read say the same thing under Mechanical Combination Lock: find your combination on the back of the owner's manual. The front cover of the older manual has blanks for the model number, serial number, dial combination and key number, which tells you what SentrySafe expects you to keep track of.

Before the first opening, the manuals add three things:

  • Shipping screw. Some units have one on the inside of the door. The older manual says to remove it before first use.
  • Keys on dual key models. The P44621 manual says keys for dual key/combination locks ship inside the safe; take them out before locking. The FP/FPW manual says keys for override-key models ship outside.
  • Test it. Both manuals say to test the combination several times before putting valuables inside.

The combination was printed on the back. The manual was in the recycling. That's the whole mystery, usually.

Sentry safe dial combination: the steps, exactly as written

From the Fire-Safe manual (P44621), which SentrySafe links from its SF/SFW fire safe pages, including the SFW123CS:

  1. Dual key models only: insert the key, turn it to "unlocked," then remove it. The manual says this key is a secondary lock, not an override.
  2. Turn the dial to 0. Then turn right (clockwise), passing 0 three times, and keep turning until you reach the first number.
  3. Turn left (counterclockwise). Go past the second number once, and stop the second time the dial reaches it.
  4. Turn right (clockwise) and stop at the third number.
  5. Rotate the handle downward to open the door. The manual says a water-resistant safe may take a limited amount of force.

On FP/FPW models (P71885 manual), the dial steps are the same, and the last step is "pull handle outward to open the door."

Step three is where it goes wrong. "Past it once, stop the second time" means the second number goes by under the mark one full time before you stop on it. Stop the first time it comes around and the lock never lines up. (I read that sentence in three manuals. It's the same sentence every time. It's still the one that gets people.)

Sentry safe 3 number combination: what the manuals show

The SentrySafe Fire-Safe manuals we read describe a three-number combination, dialed right, left, right. Their example label shows three numbers followed by "RLR" — right, left, right.

People also search for a 3-digit, 4-number or 4-digit Sentry combination. The manuals we read don't describe a four-number dial. If your safe's manual shows a different sequence, that manual wins. If your "combination" is digits on a keypad, it's an electronic code, and the steps are in how to reset a Sentry safe code.

Sentry safe combination lock dials right but won't open

The Fire-Safe manual's notes and troubleshooting table cover the usual causes, in plain order:

  • Handle not horizontal before dialing. Make sure the handle is rotated all the way up to horizontal before you start.
  • Tight water-resistant gasket. Hold the handle up while dialing, then pull it down.
  • Dual key lock still locked. On dual key models, the key has to be in the unlocked position.
  • Handle moves, bolts don't, and you hear a click. That's a clutch protecting the bolts from force. Lift the handle until it clicks back into place, then repeat the dialing steps.
  • Door just won't open. The manual says to repeat steps 1–5.
  • Dial won't turn at all. The table lists two causes: a shipping screw still in place, or locking bolts not fully extended. Remove the screw from the back of the door, or make sure the handle is horizontal.

The handle has a clutch. Your wrist doesn't. Let the dial do the work.

If none of that helps, SentrySafe's manuals ask you to call customer service at 1-800-828-1438 instead of returning the safe. Our guide to a Sentry safe that won't open covers the wider list, including keypad models.

Locking a Sentry combination safe again

Opening is half the procedure. The manuals are specific about the other half.

Fire-Safe (P44621):

  1. Close the door and pull the handle up to horizontal. On water-resistant units, you may need to press on the front left side of the door first.
  2. Spin the dial at least twice to the right.
  3. Dual key models: turn the key to "locked" and remove it.

FP/FPW (P71885): close the door to re-engage the bolts, then spin the dial at least twice to the right to scramble it. The manual adds that the safe will not lock until the dial is scrambled, and not unless the key cylinder, if fitted, is turned to locked.

A dial left on the last number is a dial that's still open for the next person to try the handle. Spin it.

Sentry safe dial combination reset: not an option

Both Fire-Safe manuals put it in one line: "Combination can not be changed." The dial combination is set at the factory, printed on the back of the manual, and stays that way.

That changes how you protect it. You can't rotate it after a roommate moves out. You can only control who sees the manual. For safes from other brands that do allow a dial change, our general guide on how to change a safe combination explains who does it.

Write down the model and serial number while the door is open

A dial safe has no reset, so the model and serial number are what stand between a lost combination and a long week. SentrySafe's support page lists where to look, by type:

  • Fire and SF/SFW safes: inside on the back of the door, along the door hinge, lower right corner of the door, or inside right corner of the front door.
  • FP/FPW safes: top or front of the safe.
  • V-line safes: right side or back, or on the side — and the page says to peel back the sticker on the dial.
  • Gun safes with electronic or manual dial locks: back or side of the safe.

Copy both numbers to a place that isn't the safe and isn't the manual. If the manual goes missing, those two numbers are what SentrySafe's replacement service asks for first.

Here's the catch: no number on the page, no dialing

Everything above assumes you have the combination. If you don't, this page can't help, and neither can any page that claims to "crack" a Sentry dial. Those methods aren't published here, and SentrySafe doesn't publish them either.

What SentrySafe does publish is a retrieval process. Its replacement site says a serial number is required for combination requests, that identity verification may be required, and that combination orders are sent by email. The full process is in our Sentry safe lost combination guide. A licensed locksmith or safe technician who verifies ownership is the other route.

The manuals also point to registration. Both Fire-Safe manuals say registering the safe lets you retrieve forgotten codes and combinations. The manuals point to registermysafe.com, and it's easier to do while you still have the manual in hand.

Skip it if: when this isn't your problem

That's the procedure. Handle up, dial to 0, right three times, left past once, right to stop, handle down. Then spin the dial twice when you close it, register the safe, and move the back page of the manual somewhere a houseguest won't find it.
