How to Open a Sentry Safe With a Key, by What the Key Is For
SentrySafe puts a key in a lot of boxes. Some of those keys open the safe. Some only open it if you also know the code. One manual calls its key "a secondary locking feature not an override key," which is the most honest sentence in the safe aisle. Before you turn anything, find out which kind you're holding.
Short answer: How to open a Sentry safe with a key depends on what the key does. On dual key fire safes, the key is a second lock: turn it to unlocked, then enter the code or dial the combination and turn the handle. On models with an override key — the T8-331, the QAP pistol safes, X-line security safes and select FP/FPW fire safes — the key opens the safe by itself, following the steps in that model's manual. On key-only chests and files, the key is the whole lock. Check your manual to see which you have.
How to open a Sentry safe with a key is not one procedure, because SentrySafe's key does three different jobs across its line. Below is what the manuals say for each job, in the order they apply. For the brand overview and its models, see our SentrySafe brand page. If your safe uses a key as its only lock, our safes with key page covers that category.
What the key is for decides how to open a Sentry safe
Three roles show up in the SentrySafe documents we read:
- Secondary lock (dual key models). The Fire-Safe manual says the key on dual key/combination and dual key/electronic locks is "a secondary locking feature not an override key." You need the key and the code or combination.
- Override key. The T8-331, QAP1BE/QAP1E, X-line and select FP/FPW manuals each describe a key that opens the safe without the code, as a backup for a failed lock or lost code.
- Key-only lock. Chests and files with only a keyed lock. SentrySafe's chest and file manual points to SentrySafe.com for replacement keys.
The model number tells you which manual applies. SentrySafe's support page lists where to find it: on chests and files, the model number is on the bottom and the serial number inside the lid; on fire and SF/SFW safes, it can be inside on the back of the door, along the hinge or on the bottom lip of the keypad.
The key looked important. The manual said otherwise.
How to open a Sentry fire safe with a dual key lock
This is the procedure in SentrySafe's Fire-Safe manual (P44621) for dual key models, mechanical or electronic.
- Insert the key, turn it to the "unlocked" position, then remove it.
- Dial models: rotate the dial to 0, then right past 0 three times and on to the first number; left past the second number once and stop on it the second time; right to the third number. Keypad models: enter your 5-digit code. A green light means it's correct, and you have four seconds to turn the handle.
- Rotate the handle downward to open the door.
The manual adds two tips. Make sure the handle is all the way up in the horizontal position before you start, and on water-resistant safes, you may need to lift the handle while entering the code or dialing. If the door is tight, the troubleshooting table says to hold the handle up while you input, then pull it down.
To lock: close the door, pull the handle up to horizontal, spin the dial at least twice to the right on dial models, then turn the key to "locked" and remove it.
New dual key safes, per the same manual, ship with the keys inside the safe. Take them out before you close the door for the first time.
Override keys: how to open a Sentry safe box when the keypad can't
On these models the key does open the safe alone. Each manual has its own steps.
FP/FPW fire safes with override key (select models, P71885 manual):
- Insert the key into the cylinder and turn it to "unlocked."
- Pull the handle outward to open the door.
To lock, close the door and turn the key to "locked." The manual notes the safe will not lock unless the key cylinder is turned to the locked position. These keys ship outside the safe.
T8-331 security safe (P56435 manual): the manual describes the override for when the electronic lock fails or no codes are available. Remove the keypad by rotating its cover counterclockwise and pulling it toward you, insert the provided key and turn it clockwise, then open the door. The manual's last line on the subject: "Do not lock override key inside of unit."
QAP1BE/QAP1E Quick Access Pistol Safe (P56411 manual): insert the override key into the keyhole and turn it clockwise. The manual says the key will open the safe if you lose your code, and that it must be back in the locked position when you close the lid.
X-line security safe (X014E manual): remove the cover between the knob and the keypad, insert the override key and turn it clockwise, and while holding it there, turn the knob counterclockwise to open the door. The manual uses the same steps for first-time opening and calls it the emergency method.
These are owner procedures. They need the key that came with your safe.
If the safe holds a firearm and children live in or visit the home, keep the key and the code where a child cannot find or reach them. The QAP manual says to store them in a secure location other than the safe.
Key-only Sentry chests and files
SentrySafe's chest and file manual is mostly pictures, so for exact steps, the illustrations in your copy are the reference. Its text is clear on one point: if you need a replacement key, order it through SentrySafe.com, or call customer care if you don't have internet access.
(The chest manual is mostly drawings and warranty text. I read it anyway. That's the job.)
Sentry safe reset code with key: what the key can and can't do
A key gets you through the door. It doesn't change the code by itself. On some models, once the door is open, the reset is easy:
- T8-331: press the red button inside the safe and enter a new 5-digit user code.
- X-line: with the door open, press the red change button on the hinge side and enter a new code of 1 to 10 digits, then "#".
- QAP pistol safes: hold the reset button behind the battery pack until the keypad flashes three times, then enter a 4- to 6-digit code.
Full steps, plus the P-key routine on fire safes, are in our guide on how to reset a Sentry safe code.
Can a locksmith open a Sentry safe? Yes, with conditions
A licensed locksmith or safe technician is the legitimate route when you have neither the key nor a working code. Expect to be asked for proof that the safe is yours. A good technician asks before touching the lock; one who doesn't is telling you something about who else he'd open safes for.
Often there's a cheaper first call. SentrySafe's US replacement site sells replacement keys. It asks for the model number and the key number, which the site says may be engraved on the face of the lock, printed in the owner's manual or stamped on the original key. It may require identity verification before it processes a request. The site says requests can take up to 7–10 business days to process, that most key orders ship within three business days, and that there is a non-refundable charge. Expedited key orders go through customer service at 1-800-828-1438.
We don't describe any other way into a locked safe, and we'd be wary of any page that does.
Here's the catch: the backup that lives in the wrong place
An override key works only from outside. The T8-331 and QAP manuals both say not to lock the key inside the safe, and the X-line manual says the same in capital letters. A backup locked inside the thing it backs up is a paperweight with a story.
The second catch is the dual key. On those Fire-Safe models, losing the key locks you out even if you know the code, because the key lock stays in the locked position. The Fire-Safe troubleshooting table lists "key lock is in the locked position" as a reason the door won't open after a correct code.
Picture Kevin, our hypothetical burglar, in your bedroom. He doesn't look for the key on the safe. He looks for it on the hook next to the safe, because that's where it usually is. Then he's done.
Skip it if: when the key isn't your answer
- You don't have the key. See how to open a Sentry safe without a key for which models still open with the code.
- The key turns but the door still won't open. Handle position, gasket or batteries may be the issue. See our guide to a Sentry safe that won't open.
- You have the key but lost the combination. That's a different request to SentrySafe. See Sentry safe lost combination.
- The keypad is dead and your key is a dual key, not an override. Change the batteries from outside first: how to change the battery in a Sentry safe.
That's the case. Read the key section of your manual, learn whether your key is an override or a second lock, and test it once with the door open. Then move the key off the hook next to the safe and give it a home Kevin wouldn't think to check.

Questions people ask about how to open sentry safe with keys
Does the key open a Sentry safe without the code?
Only if it is an override key. SentrySafe's Fire-Safe manual for dual key models says that key is a secondary lock, not an override, so you still need the code or combination. Models such as the T8-331, the QAP1BE/QAP1E pistol safe, the X-line and select FP/FPW safes have an override key that opens the safe on its own, per their manuals.
How do you open a Sentry fire safe with a dual key lock?
Insert the key, turn it to the unlocked position and remove it, then enter your code or dial your combination and turn the handle down, per SentrySafe's Fire-Safe manual. The key alone does not open these models.
Can a locksmith open a Sentry safe?
Yes. A licensed locksmith or safe technician can open a locked safe and should ask you to prove it is yours first. SentrySafe also sells replacement keys through its replacement service if you have the model number and the key number or serial number.
Where do I get a replacement key for a Sentry safe?
From SentrySafe's US replacement site or customer service at 1-800-828-1438. The site asks for the model number and the key number, which may be on the face of the lock, in the owner's manual or on the original key. There is a non-refundable charge and identity verification may be required.
