How Much Does a Gun Safe Weigh? Real Weights From Real Spec Sheets

Gun safe listings give you the gun count in large type and the weight somewhere near the bottom, next to the shipping note. The gun count is a guess about your rifles. The weight is a fact about the safe. If I had to pick one number to read first, it wouldn't be the one in large type.

Short answer: How much does a gun safe weigh? On manufacturer spec pages, gun cabinets weigh about 56 to 136 lb, fire-rated 18- to 24-gun safes roughly 280 to 600 lb, full-size 30- to 50-gun safes about 520 to 1,200 lb, and premium or vault-style safes 1,500 to over 4,500 lb. Liberty Safe's own tiers run from 200 lb for entry-level to 5,000 lb for commercial-grade. Steel thickness and fire insulation drive the number more than gun count does.

This page is about gun safes only. For fire chests, home safes, wall safes and floor safes, see how much does a safe weigh. To compare current models with their listed weights, go to our gun safes page.

Gun safe weight by size: manufacturer examples

Every figure here is an empty weight from the manufacturer's own product page. They're examples chosen to show the range, not a ranking.

Fire ratings above are as the maker lists them. None of these product pages names an independent testing lab, so read them as claimed, not rated.

How much does a 24 gun safe weigh

The "24-gun" class shows how much construction matters. Two examples:

  • Liberty Centurion 24: 375 lb, 14-gauge steel, per Liberty
  • a smaller 24-gun Cannon model: 280 lb, per Cannon's weight article

Step up in steel and fire lining at a similar size and the weight jumps. Liberty's Colonial 23, which Liberty lists for 25 long guns in its standard layout, weighs 577 lb with 12-gauge steel and a 75-minute claimed fire rating. That's about 200 lb more than the Centurion 24 for a similar gun count.

Same number on the door. Different safe behind it.

How heavy is a gun safe in each price tier

Liberty Safe's weight guide gives the clearest map of the market:

  • Entry-level: 200 to 600 lb
  • Mid-range: 600 to 1,000 lb
  • High-end: 1,000 to 1,600 lb
  • Commercial-grade: 2,000 to 5,000 lb

Fort Knox's FAQ says its entry models start around 450 to 600 lb, and top-end models such as the Legend 7261XD "exceed 4,500 pounds." Fort Knox lists its Maverick 60x24x18 at 555 lb.

At the other end, gun cabinets aren't safes in the same sense, and the weights show it. Stack-On lists its 10-gun cabinet at 56 lb empty. Liberty's 14-gauge gun cabinets are 114 and 136 lb, with no fire rating.

How much does a fireproof gun safe weigh

Fire protection is heavy. Liberty's weight guide says safes with more fireboard layers "offer better fire protection but weigh more," and that extra steel layers and composite liners add considerable weight.

Liberty's own range shows it at the same 60.5-in height:

  • Colonial 23: 577 lb, 75 minutes claimed
  • Lincoln 25: 767 lb, 120 minutes claimed, 10-gauge steel
  • Presidential 25: 1,021 lb, 150 minutes claimed, 7-gauge steel

The Presidential 25 holds fewer long guns (22) than the Lincoln 25 (27), and weighs 254 lb more. That's where the pounds go: walls, not storage. (Thicker walls take their space from the inside, and the spec sheet notices even if the brochure doesn't.)

"Fireproof" gun safes are fire-resistant in practice. The weight tells you there's insulation. Only the rating, and who tested it, tells you how much.

Why gun safe weight varies: steel gauge, fireboard, the door

Three things move the number.

Steel gauge. Liberty: "The lower the number, the thicker the steel." The federal standard gauge for sheet steel puts 14 gauge at 0.0781 in, 12 gauge at 0.1094 in, 10 gauge at 0.1406 in and 7 gauge at 0.1875 in. Liberty's lineup runs from 14 gauge (Centurion) to 7 gauge (Presidential), and the weights follow.

Fireboard. More layers, more weight, per Liberty.

The door. Browning's manual says the door "can be as much as 1/3 of the total weight of the safe." That's why an open door on an un-anchored safe is a tipping hazard.

Liberty adds one honest caveat: bigger isn't always heavier. Some larger safes use thinner steel and less fireboard and can weigh less than smaller ones.

Gun safe weight after you load it

The empty weight is the starting point. Liberty's do-it-yourself moving page says a loaded gun safe "can weigh well over a thousand pounds and, in many cases, 2 or 3 thousand pounds." Long guns, ammunition and documents add up quickly.

That loaded number is the one your floor carries every day. If the safe is going on an upper floor, see where to put a gun safe for the joist question, and how to move a gun safe for delivery day.

Where to find your gun safe's real weight

The number you want is the empty weight on the manufacturer's product page or in the owner's manual. Retail listings sometimes show a shipping weight instead, which includes the pallet and packaging, and sometimes show nothing at all. If the two disagree, the manufacturer's spec table wins.

A few habits help:

  • Match the exact model. Liberty's Centurion line runs from 245 lb to 411 lb across four sizes that share one product page. Pick the right column.
  • Note the depth extras. Liberty's Fatboy page says to add 3 in of depth for the handle. That's not weight, but it decides whether the safe fits through the door that the weight has to go through.
  • Write it down before delivery. The movers will ask. So will anyone checking your floor.

If no manufacturer page lists a weight, treat that as information. A maker that won't say how heavy the steel is rarely says much about the steel.

Here's the catch: weight is a clue, not a rating

The Marketing Department would like you to read weight as security. It's a clue, not a verdict. Liberty's weight guide says it plainly: a safe whose door is easy to pry isn't more secure because it's heavy.

Weight tells you how much steel and fireboard went into the box. It doesn't tell you how the door was built, what the bolts engage, or whether an independent lab tested anything. For burglary resistance, look for a UL Residential Security Container listing, which covers the attack test the weight can't. For fire, look for the rating, the temperature and who tested it.

Skip it if: when you don't need the heaviest gun safe

  • You're on an upper floor with unknown joists. A lighter safe, properly anchored, beats a heavy one the floor can't carry.
  • You mainly need to keep a few long guns locked away. A cabinet or entry-level safe, bolted down, may be the right size.
  • You move often. Every 500 lb you add is a moving bill you'll pay again.
  • You're buying for fire. Compare the fire rating and the tester. Pounds alone won't tell you.

That's the scale reading. Check the empty weight on the maker's page, add what you'll put inside, and make sure your floor and your movers agree with the total. Then anchor it, so the weight is working for you and not for whoever shows up with a dolly.
