How Much Does a Safe Weigh? From 13-Pound Chests to One-Ton Vaults

Safe listings love to show the safe. They rarely show the weight in the first photo, and almost never in the headline. That's a shame, because the weight tells you more than the stock photo of gold bars ever will: how it was built, where it can go, who has to carry it, and how easily somebody else could.

Short answer: How much does a safe weigh? Anywhere from about 13 pounds to well over a ton, depending on type. On manufacturer spec pages, small fire chests run roughly 13 to 20 lb, home fire safes about 55 to 220 lb, wall safes 40 to 60 lb, in-floor safes about 80 to 140 lb, and large gun or vault-style safes several hundred to 1,800 lb and more. Fire insulation and steel thickness add the pounds. The model's spec page has the only number that matters for yours.

All weights below are empty weights quoted from the manufacturer's own page, and they're examples, not a survey. For gun safes specifically, our guide to how much a gun safe weighs goes model by model. To compare safes by type, start at the home safes overview.

Safe weight by type: manufacturer examples

The spread is wide, so here it is in one place. Each line is a specific model, quoted from its maker's spec page.

Type Example model Weight (manufacturer) Capacity or size
Fire chest SentrySafe 1200 13.32 lb 0.18 cu ft
Fire/water chest SentrySafe CHW20221 20.4 lb 0.28 cu ft
Wall safe V-Line Quick Vault XL 40 lb (shipping) 14 x 28 x 3.5 in
Wall safe Barska AX12408 48 lb 31.5 x 15.5 x 4 in
Home fire safe SentrySafe FPW082E 55 lb 0.81 cu ft
Home fire safe SentrySafe SFW082ET 78.64 lb 0.81 cu ft
In-floor safe Hollon B1500 79 lb 14.9 x 13.5 x 11.8 in
Home fire safe SentrySafe SFW123GDC 86.69 lb 1.23 cu ft
Home fire safe SentrySafe SFW205GQC 124.8 lb 2 cu ft
In-floor safe Hollon B3500 140 lb 18 x 13.5 x 23.5 in
Large fire safe SentrySafe EF4738E 217 lb 4.71 cu ft
Large gun safe Liberty Presidential 50 1,585 lb 72.5 x 42.25 x 27.75 in
Vault-style safe Fort Knox Protector Vault 1,805 lb 72 x 61 x 27 in

Liberty Safe's moving guide gives the broad version: the average home or gun safe weighs anywhere from 200 to over 1,500 pounds, "with some models exceeding a ton."

How much does a small safe weigh

Small safes are the light end, and the numbers stay friendly. SentrySafe's 1200 fire chest weighs 13.32 lb and is sold with a carrying handle. The CHW20221 chest weighs 20.4 lb, per SentrySafe's store.

Step up to a small cabinet-style fire safe and the weight jumps. Two SentrySafe models with the same 0.81 cu ft capacity show how much construction matters:

  • FPW082E, with a resin-wrapped concrete exterior: 55 lb
  • SFW082ET, steel: 78.64 lb

Same space inside. Nearly 24 pounds apart. Materials, not size, made the difference.

How much does a fireproof safe weigh

"Fireproof" safes — fire-resistant, in the language of anyone who tested them — weigh more than plain steel boxes because of the insulation built into the walls and door. SentrySafe's fire-rated range climbs steadily with capacity:

  • SFW123GDC (1.23 cu ft): 86.69 lb, UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F, per SentrySafe
  • SFW205GQC (2 cu ft): 124.8 lb, UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F, per SentrySafe
  • EF4738E (4.71 cu ft): 217 lb, rated for 30 minutes at up to 1,400°F; the page names ETL in its specs and UL in a feature bullet, so the tester is unclear

That last one is a pattern worth knowing. The heavier safe in this list has the shorter fire rating. Weight tells you there's material in the walls. It doesn't tell you what the lab said about it.

The Stack-On FAQ adds a detail for fire safes in general: the door is "approximately 1/3 of the total weight of the safe."

How much does a home safe weigh, and a large one

Home safes sit in a wide middle band. The fire safes above, from 55 to 217 lb, are typical of what's sold for documents and valuables. Larger security and gun safes go much further.

Liberty Safe's guide to gun safe weight sorts the market into tiers: entry-level 200 to 600 lb, mid-range 600 to 1,000, high-end 1,000 to 1,600, and commercial-grade 2,000 to 5,000. At the top of Liberty's own residential range, the Presidential 50 is listed at 1,585 lb. Fort Knox lists its Protector Vault at 1,805 lb.

How much does a large safe weigh, then? Roughly as much as a small car's engine and transmission, packed into a box you'll want against a wall. (I've stopped picturing the delivery crew. It doesn't help.)

Wall safe and floor safe weight

These two are the outliers, and for the same reason: the building does the heavy lifting.

Wall safes fit between studs, so they're shallow and light. V-Line lists its Quick Vault XL at 40 lb shipping weight, at 14 x 28 x 3.5 in, and its Tactical Closet Vault at 62 lb shipping weight. Barska lists its AX12408 biometric wall safe at 48 lb, and its page says "Fireproof: No."

Floor safes are installed in concrete, per Hollon's floor-safe page. Hollon's in-floor models run from 79 lb (B1500) to 140 lb (B3500). The concrete around them is what makes them hard to remove, not their own weight.

Why safe weight varies: steel, insulation, design

Liberty Safe's weight guide names the drivers:

  • Size. More box means more steel and more fireboard, though Liberty notes some larger safes weigh less than smaller ones because they use thinner steel.
  • Steel gauge. "The lower the number, the thicker the steel." Under the federal standard gauge for sheet steel, 10 gauge is 0.1406 in and 14 gauge is 0.0781 in, so a lower number means much thicker plate.
  • Fireboard layers. More layers, better fire protection, more weight.
  • Design. Extra steel layers and concrete or composite liners add considerable weight.

The Marketing Department likes to put the weight next to words like "heavy-duty." The spec sheet puts it next to a gauge number. Read the spec sheet.

Lightweight gun safes and lightweight "fireproof" safes

There's real demand for light safes: renters, upstairs apartments, people who move often. The trade-off is direct. Less steel and less fireboard mean less weight, and Liberty's weight guide ties both to protection.

A lightweight fire-rated safe can still carry a fire rating; SentrySafe's FPW082E, at 55 lb, is UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F, per SentrySafe. What a light safe can't do is resist being carried off. That job falls to the anchors. For gun safes in particular, see the gun safe weight guide, which covers the cabinet end of the market.

Here's the catch: heavy isn't the same as secure

The opinion I'll defend: a safe's weight is a moving problem, not a security feature. Liberty Safe says so in its own weight guide: a safe with a door design that's easy to pry isn't more secure, no matter how much it weighs.

Picture Kevin, our hypothetical burglar, looking at an 87-pound fire safe sitting loose in a closet. He doesn't need to open it. He needs a hand truck and five minutes. Four anchor bolts turn that safe into part of the house.

So the honest answer to "how heavy does a safe need to be" is: heavy enough for the rating you need, and then bolted down. Our guide on how to bolt a safe to the floor covers concrete and wood.

Skip it if: when the weight doesn't matter much

  • It's a wall or floor safe. The wall or the concrete holds it. Check the installation, not the scale.
  • You're buying a document chest for a closet shelf. At 13 to 20 lb, weight is about convenience, not security.
  • You're not moving it again. Weight matters once on delivery day. Check the floor and the route, then forget about it.
  • You only care about fire. Compare the rating and who tested it. Weight won't tell you that.

That's the weigh-in. Look up the empty weight on the manufacturer's page, check that your floor and your route can take it, and if the number is under a few hundred pounds, bolt it down before you put anything inside.

Questions people ask about how much does a safe weighs

What is the average weight of a safe?

There isn't a meaningful single average, because safe types differ so much. Manufacturer spec pages we read range from 13.32 lb for a SentrySafe 1200 fire chest to 1,805 lb for a Fort Knox Protector Vault, and Liberty Safe puts the average home or gun safe at 200 to over 1,500 pounds.

How much does a small safe weigh?

Small fire chests and home safes on SentrySafe's store range from 13.32 lb (model 1200, 0.18 cu ft) to 86.69 lb (SFW123GDC, 1.23 cu ft). The exact figure depends on capacity and construction, so check the spec page for your model.

How much does a fireproof safe weigh?

Fire-rated safes are heavier than plain steel boxes of the same size because of their insulation. SentrySafe examples: 20.4 lb for the CHW20221 chest, 86.69 lb for the SFW123GDC and 124.8 lb for the SFW205GQC, the last two UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F per SentrySafe.

How much does a wall safe weigh?

Wall safes are light because they sit between studs. V-Line lists its Quick Vault XL at 40 lb shipping weight and its Tactical Closet Vault at 62 lb, and Barska lists its AX12408 biometric wall safe at 48 lb.

How heavy does a safe need to be?

Weight alone doesn't make a safe secure. Liberty Safe notes that a heavy safe with an easily pried door is not more secure. Small and medium safes should be bolted to the floor so that weight isn't the only thing keeping them in place.
